Volunteering at the Museum

Come share your love of Florida history.

As a volunteer at the South Florida Museum, you will have an opportunity to meet new people and make a difference in the lives of school children. Volunteers play an integral role in the daily operation of the South Florida Museum. The South Florida Museum's unique learning experience depends on volunteers for continued success and growth.
Docent Training
Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Planetarium Volunteer - Greet visitors to the Planetarium area, scan & collect tickets and answer questions in regard to planetarium shows.
  • Aquarium Host/Hostess - Greet visitors to the Aquarium area and answer questions about our resident manatee Snooty and manatees in general.
  • Collections - Volunteers are needed to help catalogue the collection, enter data into the collections database program, and assist in installation of exhibits.
  • Discovery Place Volunteer - (our hands-on room for children) Greet children as they come into Discovery Place and help them "discover" the exhibits. Provide guidance for hands-on projects and read books aloud during story time.
  • Docent - (tour guide) give tours to school-aged children and adults. Docents lead visitors toward a deeper understanding of Museum artifacts and the history, people, and stories behind the exhibits. Training is provided and trainees may accompany experienced docents while becoming familiar with the exhibits.
  • Gallery Greeters - Greet visitors and explain interesting facts pertaining to specific exhibits.
  • Museum Store Volunteer - Assist in the museum store by selling admission tickets and merchandise.
  • Information Desk Aide - Greet and provide assistance at the Information Desk.
  • Special Events - Assist with special events throughout the year, such as Snooty's Birthday Party, exhibit openings, receptions, and summer camps.

  • Training is available for all volunteer positions.
