At the South Florida Museum and Bishop Planetarium, Inc. volunteers play an integral role in helping the staff and board achieve our mission, “To engage and inspire learners of all ages; we protect, interpret and communicate scientific and cultural knowledge of Florida, the world, and our universe.”
You will work with great volunteers and staff as you develop your knowledge of Florida’s natural and cultural history, the environment, manatee conservation and care and our universe while making a real difference in the lives of our community and our visitors. Volunteer benefits include 50% discount on Museum membership, 10% off Museum store purchases and the ability to earn free passes to the Museum.
Current volunteer opportunities include the following positions listed below.
Education & Programs
Lead curious learners across time and place to reveal the secrets of early Florida. No experience necessary. We will train you in Museum content, learning techniques and crowd control. Must have desire to work with children and adults and be able to climb stairs and stand for extended periods of time. Hours are generally M-F 9:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Volunteers may choose any days that fit their schedule.
Family Night Educator
Engage with Museum staff to design, prepare and lead educational activities for learns of all ages. Must enjoy working directly with children and families! Family Nights occur 3 pm – 8 pm on the 1st Saturday of most months; Volunteers are need an hour early at 2:00 p.m. to prepare activities and review the event schedule.
Bartender & Food Sales (for Film Fridays, Stelliferous Live & other Special Programs)
Bartenders will assist Museum staff in the sale of beer, wine, soda and snacks. No experience necessary but a fast paced, fun attitude is a plus! Must be 21 years of age or older.
Ushers warmly greet guests and collect their tickets as they enter the Bishop Planetarium, or direct them to the front desk to purchase their ticket. Once the film has begun the Ushers will help direct guests to the restrooms or exit as needed. Ushers/Ticket Takers are needed on Friday evenings from 5:30-8:00pm for our ongoing Film Fridays movie series.
Collection & Exhibitions
We have numerous collections related projects that need skilled volunteers. Projects require some knowledge or experience working with collection objects. Further information and project list available upon request.
Membership Office Support
Assist in the fulfillment of Museum memberships. Desire to work with computer based programs or paper mailings, attention to process and detail. Available day and time range Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4 pm. Volunteers may choose the days and times that fit their schedule.
Work with computer program to input information for mailings and program attendance. Must be able to work with computer based programs. Available day and time range Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4 pm. Volunteers may choose the days and times that fit their schedule.
Marketing Office Support
Assist in the archiving and organization of marketing materials and data. Desire to work with computer based programs or paper filing and archiving, attention to process and detail. Available day and time range Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm. Volunteers may choose the days and times that fit their schedule.
Facilities & Fabrication
Seeking experienced painters who would be willing to help paint the exterior of the Museum. Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. Volunteers may choose the days and times that fit their schedule.
Builders with cabinet experience to assist with exhibit cabinetry pieces for a September exhibit. Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. Volunteers may choose the days and times that fit their schedule.
Volunteer manatee handlers assist staff with general husbandry care and support for the Aquarium’s rehabilitation manatees.
Duties include food prep, creating environmental enrichment devices, assisting the dive spotter and feeding the manatees. May include participation in animal transportation and physical exams as well as plant collection.
Touch tank volunteers present the animals residing in the touch tank to the public and give informal presentations. Their duties also include environmental sampling, assisting with water changes and may include feeding.
