Summer Learning Day Kicked off Summer Fun at the Museum

More than 1,700 visitors joined us on Thursday for Summer Learning Day at the Museum, sponsored by Mosaic. This free day for Manatee and Sarasota county students (and chaperones) helps families identify local resources that offer fun, engaging learning opportunities in their own backyards and to keep students from losing gains made during the previous school year.

“We’re really excited to serve more and more students from Manatee and Sarasota counties during Summer Learning Day each year,” said Museum CEO Brynne Anne Besio. “The Museum has so much to offer and we love to share it all with our young learners. And we hope to see them all back again and again thanks to the Summer Reading Log program.”

The Museum holds this event in conjunction with a larger national movement to limit children’s learning loss during school downtime. The Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading is a collaboration among foundations, nonprofit partners, business leaders, government agencies, states and communities across the nation to ensure that more children in low-income families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career and a life of active citizenship. The Campaign focuses on an important predictor of school success and high school graduation: grade-level reading by the end of third grade. Summer Learning Day is also part of National Summer Learning Day, led by the National Summer Learning Association to encourage childhood learning during the summer months.

Summer Learning Day visitors received a special kids’ guide to the Museum and a Summer Reading Log. For every five hours of summer reading a student logs, they will be able to return for another free day at the Museum (one parent or guardian will also get free admission). This special Summer Reading Log offer runs through Friday, Aug. 3.
