Kick Off Summertime Learning at the South Florida Museum on June 21

FREE Summer Learning Day for Sarasota and Manatee county students sponsored by Mosaic focuses on stopping summer learning loss and showcasing local resources that offer fun, engaging opportunities

Educators call it the summer slide and it has nothing to do with fun and games on the playground; instead, it refers to the downhill slide in learning that kids undergo when they’re out of school. During summer, most students lose up to two months of grade-level equivalency in math skills and low-income students can lose more than two months in reading achievements while their higher-income peers are making slight gains.

And making it up during the fall can take from three weeks to four months of the new school year.

That’s why the South Florida Museum is kicking off summer learning opportunities by hosting Summer Learning Day on Thursday, June 21, 2018, sponsored by Mosaic. The day includes free admission for Manatee and Sarasota county students ages 14 & younger, plus free admission for one adult chaperone per child. (Children 3 & younger are always admitted free, but their adult chaperones will not be permitted free admission.)

Summer Learning Day at the Museum is also designed to help families identify local resources that offer fun, engaging learning opportunities in their own backyards — and is providing a way for families and children who may not normally have the means to visit the Museum and create opportunities for them to keep returning throughout the summer.

“Every school year, we help to enhance learning opportunities for children from school districts in eight counties through field trips and other special programs,” said Museum CEO Brynne Anne Besio. “But we know through studies that summer presents an obstacle in learning for many children. Since we take our role of providing public service to our community seriously, we’re happy to be joining with the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading for the fourth year in a row to host this event and to provide opportunities for the students to come back again and again. We’d also like to thank Mosaic for sponsoring this event.”

Visitors to Summer Learning Day at the Museum will receive a special kids’ guide to the Museum and a Summer Reading Log. For every five hours of summer reading a student logs, they will be able to return for another free day at the Museum (one parent or guardian will also get free admission). This special Summer Reading Log offer runs through Friday, Aug. 3.

The Museum’s Summer Learning Day is part of a larger national movement to limit children’s learning loss during school downtime. The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading is a collaboration among foundations, nonprofit partners, business leaders, government agencies, states and communities across the nation to ensure that more children in low-income families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career and a life of active citizenship. The Campaign focuses on an important predictor of school success and high school graduation: grade-level reading by the end of third grade. Summer Learning Day is also part of National Summer Learning Day, led by the National Summer Learning Association to encourage childhood learning during the summer months.

Summer Learning Day at the South Florida Museum is sponsored by Mosaic, which promotes education in Manatee County through investment and partnership.
