Night Flyers and Day Trippers - Florida Moth Images by Joseph Scheer

September 13, 2008 - January 11, 2009

In a place where art, science and technology meet, Joseph Scheer's images of moths emerge. These ubiquitous creatures are often considered drab-colored poor relations of the "beautiful" butterfly. Scheer's digitally scanned images will change that notion forever. Using a high-resolution scanner, digital printing technology, and an artist's sensibility, he brings forth the subtleties and astonishing varieties of color and textures that moths possess. The result is a glittering jewel box of brilliantly colored, intricately formed creatures, each with its own landscape of tiny hairs, kaleidoscopic color, iridescent eyes and antennae as intricate as filigree. In this exhibit, Scheer includes 29 large format images of moths found in Florida.

America Goes to the Polls: A brief look at past elections 1789 to 1992

October 11 - November 30, 2009
      Second Floor Curator's Choice Gallery

Every four years we experience the free-for-all we call a Presidential Campaign. They are filled with oratory, music and slogans. The winner becomes enshrined in history. . . the loser forgotten.  They are popularity contests on a national scale. And they are the bedrock of our political system. The South Florida Museum takes a look at the history of campaigning with memorabilia and objects beginning with early presidential campaigns of the 19th century.  This exhibit will help you to remember all those names and dates you learned in school and have slowly forgotten. In this presidential election year perhaps we should take a minute to reflect on the past presidents, the great and not so great, and the contribution they made to the formation of our nation.
