Meet "Doctor Bugs" - Dr. Mark Moffett

On Thursday, Sept. 29 the South Florida Museum will host an exclusive evening with Dr. Mark Moffett, a Research Associate in Entomology (the scientific study of insects) at the Smithsonian Institution and real-life adventurer. Moffett will deliver a presentation titled “Adventures Among Ants: A Global Safari with a Cast of Trillions,” based on his newest book by the same title that focuses on his adventures around the world with extraordinary ant species as well as fascinating scientific parallels between ant and human societies.

Called the “Indiana Jones of Entomology” by the National Geographic Society, Moffett is a scientist, tropical explorer, ecologist and photojournalist who spent the past 30 years researching ants. He has travelled the globe, from Hong Kong to Australia, Madagascar to Chile, studying hundreds of species including leafcutter, weaver, Argentine and African army ants. The scientist has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, penned more than 20 articles for the National Geographic Magazine which has featured nearly 500 of his images and appeared on Conan O’Brien’s talk show, the Colbert Report, NPR and and recently CBS Sunday Morning.

The South Florida Museum is currently featuring Moffett’s work in the East Gallery through Oct. 9, 2011.
