Exploring the Future of Energy - A Three Part Series with Mike Alexy

As recent events have demonstrated, energy is a critical part of modern society.  This three part series explores details of energy consumption, production and technologies.  Some of the questions we will try to answer include: Why did the price of oil skyrocket and what can we expect in the coming years?  Is solar electricity the best choice for Florida now?  What are the benefits and issues with the major energy alternatives?  What should Florida energy policy be?  Expect detailed presentations, perhaps some surprising ideas and the opportunity for active discussion.

Part 1 - The Future of Oil

September 8th; 7-9 pm

In Part 1 of this series, Mike sets the stage for an in-depth exploration of our energy future with the question “Is this the end of the (energy) world as we know it?". We'll explore the importance of energy, particularly oil, globally and specifically in our society; the status and direction of oil production; the causes of recent wild gyrations in oil costs; and some issues and options for meeting future demand for oil.

Part 2- The Electric Sunshine State

October 13; 7-9 pm

Electricity is integral to our daily lives.  In this, the second part of our energy symposium, we will investigate options for the future of electricity in Florida.  We will, in particular, try to answer, why doesn’t the Sunshine State have “sunshine electricity”?

Part 3 - Shocking Ideas

November 10; 7-9 pm

Energy is critical to our lives and to our society’s success.  During the next two decades we will see dramatic changes in the production and use of energy.  These changes place us at severe risk.  This third part of our energy symposium will discuss a number of “shocking” ideas to help Florida adapt to the anticipated energy challenges and minimize their risks.
